講義概要/Course description
The course will question the discourses of modern Japanese identity in the critical spirit of cultural studies. The students will reexamine and enrich their experience of modern Japanese culture through reading of texts on the topic written by an international body of experts. The students are required to prepare presentations about their favorite films, games, TV shows, music, sports or other products of Japanese popular culture, and explain in detail why and how those contents are attractive for global audiences.
達成目標/Course objectives
for Japanese students: to relativize one’s own cultural background; to work with international students towards better understanding of the global impact of modern Japanese culture for international students: to exchange information and experience of Japanese culture with Japanese students; to proceed from fandom towards critical reading and academic analysis of Japanese cultural texts
履修条件(事前に履修しておくことが望ましい科目など)/Prerequisite
The course will be a mix of online sessions, group work and individual learning. The tools needed are the Course Power (AGU system including some functions of social media) and email so the students are required to check those two at least once a week. I would like to work with students who are ready to do some online research on their own and actively participate in projects with their peers.

メッセージ/Message
This class was designed in a deliberately open-ended way, in order to give students a lot of freedom in their choice of topics to present on, as long as those topics fit broadly delineated cultural formats proposed by the instructor. So far the formula has proved right, as participants of many nationalities and backgrounds have shared a variety of perspectives on Japanese popular culture which is now a truly global phenomenon. I see my role as an instructor in moderating your conversation, and in adding new dimensions to what you have already discovered.
